Article abstract:
ABSTRACT: Background: failure to earn minimum grade in each lesson and semester, and increasing of education duration is an important concern in educational systems. Objective: Recognition of the causes of academic failure is necessary; so this study was performed to determine the status and related factors of course retaking, probation and graduation delay in alumni of Kashan health Faculty. Methods: During thirteen years, all of health majors alumni in Kashan Health Faculty (n= 1455) were selected through census in this cross-sectional study. Data, including demographic data, education duration, course retaking was gathered by a questionnaire, and probation status. frequency of course retaking, probation and graduation delay were calculated; chi-square, fisher exact test, logistic regression , crude and adjusted odds ratio were used for analyzing the status of probable risk factors. Findings: frequency of probation, delay in graduating and course retaking were %4.5, %13.3 and %24.4 respectively. The utmost probation frequency was related to second and then first semester. Low average score high school grade, lack of private education, being married, transfer from other universities, not being native, the field of study and admittance quotas were identified as the major related factors of educational drop-out. Conclusion: Demographic variables, educational background and admittance criteria are the related factors of educational drop-out. Therefore, with regard to their role, it is necessary to revise the accepting strategies and to identify at risk students and support them.
